Cancer Group, MRC Clinical Trials Unit

Senior Medical Statistician

Salary in range £40,037 - £48,016 per annum inclusive of London weighting

The MRC Clinical Trials Unit is an international centre of excellence for clinical trials and associated research, taking trials from initial ideas and design, through conduct and analysis, to final publication and dissemination of results. The major focus is on large, international, phase III randomised trials. Over 30 statisticians and epidemiologists are employed across the unit's three clinical areas (cancer, HIV and other diseases).

We currently have a vacancy in the Cancer Group for a statistician with experience in clinical trials. The majority of the Cancer Group's work involves the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials, covering many different types of cancer. Our trials aim to compare treatments by looking at survival, recurrence and side effects.  Many include related ancillary studies in quality of life, health economics and translational (biomarker) research.  Senior statisticians are key members of the trial teams that lead the development, conduct and analysis of trials and associated research. The vacancy provides exciting opportunities to make important contributions to clinical research, to input into the scientific direction of the CTUs programme of international cancer trials, as well as collaborate on methodological research projects linked to the translational research and trial development in gynae, colorectal cancer and potentially other trials across the unit's activities.

All candidates should have a post-graduate qualification in medical statistics or a closely related subject and substantial relevant experience as a statistician working on trials at a senior level.  Excellent organisational and communication skills are expected, as well as the ability to work effectively within the CTU trial teams (comprising scientists, trial managers and data managers) and to work effectively with external Chief Investigators and pharma industry collaborators.  The successful applicant will be responsible for the work of junior statisticians on interim and final analyses of ongoing clinical trials.  They will assume a key leadership role in several trial teams, taking primary responsibility for approving analysis plans, supervising interim and final analyses and manuscripts.  They will also assist Senior Clinical Scientists in prioritising work and developing the trials portfolio in line with the overall strategy of the CTU.

Salary is dependent on previous experience and includes Location Allowance and Central London Supplement. Benefits include 30 days annual leave per year, a contributory pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan. The post is available immediately.
